Each day, the First Graders learn about the saint of the day. The students have learned that saints are ordinary people like you and me who have done extraordinary things through following God’s words. Our week started with the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi. Monday was dedicated to this influential and inspiring saint. We read a book , watched a short video, created animal masks to do a play about St. Francis life listening to songs St. Francis might like (What does the Fox Say? and Who Let the Dogs out), wrote about St. Francis and ended the day with the Blessing of the Animals. It was a fun day!

On Tuesday, we made our first connection with First Graders outside our classroom! We used Google Hangout to meet with Mr. Reed’s First Grade class at Lincoln Elementary School in Lincoln, Massachusetts. We used some detective work (Google Earth) to check out what Lincoln Elementary school looked like and looked on a map of the United States to see where Massachusetts was in relation to Oregon before we called Mr. Reed. We told the First Graders in Lincoln a bit about us and heard a bit about them, then the students from each class took turns asking questions and getting to know how we are the same and how we are different. We are breaking down the classroom walls!

The First Graders have spent the first 6 weeks of school reviewing letter sounds. We will be review short vowels sounds these coming weeks to know them easily so that they can make and break words. The students need TONS of practice breaking words into individual sounds verbally so that they can make words on their paper. This week we will be working with the short vowel a. Our word wall words so far this year are: and, after, at, big, can, day, fun, give, I , it, is, in, like, my,  play, rain, see, said, the, that, why. I encourage the First Graders to use the word wall during writers workshop to spell words correctly.

Our studies of the Five Senses ended this week with brave volunteer students who were willing to teach the class about each sense from our class made posters. I was so proud of each of their courage and knowledge. The students took their first assessment of the year and did great! You will find the results in your Friday Folder. Starting this week we will be diving into learning about seeds. The students created a wonder for the Wonder Wall about seeds to get our thinking started in this direction. Please fill out the field trip form for this coming Friday morning when we will be walking a few blocks to Mrs. Galash’s home to visit her garden to see many of her plants gone to seed.
