During literacy time, we have been preparing for the start of Literacy Centers. We have practiced Read to Self and Read to Someone. We have been building our stamina when reading alone. We started with 5 minutes and worked up to 7! The students learned there are 3 ways to read a book; they can “read” the pictures, read the words and then they can retell the story. These elements of the book will be focused on when nightly reading homework starts. We will being centers next week. Homework will start the following week on October 12th. Look for information coming home Monday,  October 12th. Thanks.

During math time these first weeks of school, the First Graders have worked on reviewing addition sentences starting with a whole number then breaking it into parts. We have found all the ways to make 5, 6, 7, and 8. The students work with counting cubes, chips and white boards to record their findings. Next week we will break 9 and 10 apart. These lessons will help the First Graders learn addition facts quickly. Please practice math facts at home, riding in the car, anywhere!DSCN2714

Our studies of our 5 senses sent us to visit the science lab with Ms. Yuhas this week! Before we traveled down the hall, the students were excited, nervous and mostly curious about the science lab. Ms. Yuhas greeted the students and first went over the safety rules of the science lab. Then the groups of 3 students performed a lab to highlight using their 5 senses. Please find your child’s observation recording sheet in his/her Friday Folder. It was a successful first trip of many to the science lab for the year.IMG_1137IMG_1125IMG_1132IMG_1120IMG_1140
